PSW to power fully electric ferries on Estonia’s Virtsu–Kuivastu crossing

PSW Power & Automation AS has secured a contract to deliver advanced Megawatt Charging System (MCS) infrastructure for the Virtsu–Kuivastu ferry connection in Estonia — the main maritime link between the Estonian mainland and the island of Muhu, the gateway to Saaremaa. The award marks a significant milestone in the export of Norwegian maritime electrification technology to the European market.

For Estonia’s island communities, ferry connections are lifelines — supporting everyday life, local business and access to essential services. The new charging infrastructure will enable the operation of fully electric ferries on the route, making these connections more reliable, modern and environmentally friendly, while adding critical capacity for the broader transition to zero-emission maritime transport.

The contract builds on PSW’s experience from pioneering MCS projects currently being delivered in Norway, where high-power DC charging, battery integration and intelligent energy management are being deployed for the next generation of electric vessels. Through these projects, PSW has developed a new generation of MCS solutions based on a high-voltage 1500 VDC power architecture — delivering higher efficiency, greater charging performance and the flexibility to meet future vessel electrification requirements.

As battery-electric vessels grow in size and energy demand, the maritime sector needs charging solutions that deliver far higher power while maintaining operational reliability and grid stability. PSW has built a strong position in maritime electrification through the delivery of more than 250 MW of shore power capacity and more than 100 MWh of integrated energy storage across the Nordic region — a solid foundation for expansion into new European markets.

The Estonian project further strengthens collaboration between Nordic and Baltic partners working towards maritime decarbonization and reinforces Norway’s position as an exporter of advanced electrification technology.
