PSW Power & Automation has entered into an agreement with Fjuel Tromsø for the turnkey completion of a shore power facility at Kai 8, Prostneset, in central Tromsø. The contract covers engineering, delivery, and commissioning of a complete system that will supply cruise ships and other large vessels with emission‑free power while at berth.
At the core of the delivery is a 5 MVA system supplying cruise vessels at 11 kV and 6.6 kV, complemented by low‑voltage quayside connection points for additional vessels. PSW’s optimized design reduces both footprint and complexity — freeing more than 100 m² of space in the building for Fjuel’s continued build‑out of charging infrastructure in the port. The facility will serve cruise ships, the Norwegian Coast Guard’s new vessels, and other larger vessels calling at Tromsø.
The project marks an important step toward greener maritime operations in Northern Norway. In Tromsø, 38% of the municipality’s total climate emissions come from shipping, with half of those emissions occurring while ships are berthed. By connecting vessels to land‑based power instead of running onboard engines at quay, the facility eliminates significant CO₂ emissions, noise, and local air pollution.
“This project highlights PSW’s ability to deliver advanced shore power solutions where they make the greatest impact. We are proud of the trust Fjuel Tromsø has placed in us to finalize a facility of this importance, and we see it as a strong foundation for further electrification of the maritime sector in Northern Norway,” says Jens Hjorteset, Director of Business Development, PSW Power & Automation.
Fjuel Tromsø is a partnership between Troms Kraft (51%) and Tromsø Havn (49%), working to realize new shore power facilities with a combined capacity of 12.5 GWh, supported by NOK 34 million in investment funding from Enova.
