We recently delivered a year-round energy solution for a mountain resort and snow production facility to SkiStar in Sweden —combining a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a DC fast charger.
Winter: When Power Demand Peaks
In winter, energy consumption reaches new highs. High-pressure water pumps for snowmaking, charging of piste machines, and electric snowmobiles often happen simultaneously. These loads can exceed the capacity of the local grid—leading to costly grid upgrades or, in the worst case, operational downtime.
Summer: Generating Value from Grid Services
Once the snow melts and demand drops, the battery doesn’t just sit there. Instead, it shifts roles and starts earning income by participating in grid balancing services, like FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve) and FFR (Fast Frequency Reserve).
The battery system steps in during short-term power spikes, enabling the resort to:
- Support grid stability
- Create passive income
- Turn seasonal downtime into financial value
This is a great example of how smart energy storage can provide flexibility, reliability, and cost savings—year-round.
Thank you to SkiStar for trusting us with this important upgrade to their facilities—and for allowing us to use their project video recordings.
The video was recorded last autumn during the system’s test period. Today, the solution is fully operational and actively participating in the grid balancing market.
