The GAMMA (Green Ammonia and bio methanol fuel Maritime vessels) project is a five-year EU-funded initiative launched in January 2024, aiming to retrofit a bulk carrier to operate on climate-neutral fuels and green power. With €13 million in funding from the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program (total budget €17 million), the project unites 16 partners from across Europe to demonstrate that auxiliary generators on ocean-going vessels can be replaced by an innovative fuel system running on e-fuels.
The system will use ammonia and green methanol, converted into hydrogen via cracker and reformer technologies, purified, and then transformed into electricity by fuel cells. Renewable energy from PV panels on the hatch covers will supplement the hydrogen conversion process.
PSW Power & Automation will, together with ANT Topic, delivery a fully equipped deckhouse containing battery modules and auxiliary system. These turnkey units will provide integrated energy storage and control systems, enable safe, efficient operation and support the vessel’s transition to green energy.
This project aligns with the IMO’s target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping to net zero by 2050 and represents a significant step toward sustainable long-distance maritime transport.
